Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Summer time is almost upon us and with that comes the summer blockbuster movies. Going hand in hand of course is also the dreaded movie tie-in videogame to go along with it. Transformers: Dark of the Moon is the game to be paired with the movie coming in a few short weeks. Activision luckily is trying to break the mold of the terrible movie-based games that we've come to hate (for the most part).

Xboxaddict was luckily enough to take an early look at Dark of the Moon (DotM) recently and to be honest, I was very apprehensive about trying it out. I'm an absolute huge Transformers fan, but we all know the stigma that follows movie-based games regardless of how good the source material is. Luckily DotM is not just a retelling of the movie (and thus no spoilers) but it's actually a prologue to the movie that will end just before the new movie begins.

We got to try out two different Autobot levels; Bumblebee and Ironhide, both of which felt very different and unique to one another. The game engine is an updated one that was used in War for Cybertron but the game mechanics are different. The weapon system that was in Cybertron has been scarpped and now you'll have different weapons for each Transformer you play (two in robot mode and another two in vehicle mode). While we didn't get to see them, apparently there will be some 'flying' levels with Starscream and others as well.

What interests me is that the game will explain some parts that are apparently not fully gone into detail in the movie such as how Megatron got his new vehicle form and why Ironhide has different weapons (not the two hand cannons like before) from the previous movie.

Peter Cullen voices Optimus, so all is well and I have no worries about the voice acting yet. Controls felt solid and transforming in and out of vehicle mode was smooth and natural. Surprisingly, this i actually a movie game I'm looking forward to fully playing and I think Activision's biggest hurdle will be defeating the stigma that movie games emcompass. So make sure to check back here at Xboxaddict at launch to see the final review and what we think of Dark of the Moon as a whole. Now Roll Out!
