Wasteland Canyon

As one travels west in the High Elf lands, the pleasant climate becomes more arid; trees and brush give way to rocks and mesas. Undulating hills and the occasional mountain break through the ground here, making travel difficult but not impossible. Once past the claimed border of the High Elf lands, one enters into the lands known simply as 'the Wasteland,' or more often as 'Wasteland Canyon.'

The Canyon itself is a huge landmark that snakes its way from the Jade-See to the south northwards into unknown mountainous lands. It is too wide to build a bridge across, and too deep to merely climb down; finding a pathway to the canyon floor can itself be an adventure.

The lack of vegetation here shouldn't be taken as meaning the land is barren of life; on the contrary. As T-Energy is pursued, created, and shaped, here in the Wastelands it runs unchecked. Some have tried to tame it, searching for its sources through the broken rocks and gullies, but none have been successful. Many that try are transformed slowly by its rampant power into incredible creatures. Still others are attracted by the sheer, raw power this land bleeds, which includes those that can manipulate it into strength. The demons that come here are not to be taken lightly by beginning adventurers.

Those that are transformed are usually the weak-willed who come looking to avoid trouble with other lands; this usually means a fair share of criminals wanted in other territories come here to hide. Few that represent law and order are willing to pursue them here, thanks to the dangers that roam the landscape.

The T-Energy source is unknown, or why it affects people the way it does. Weak-willed visitors are quickly changed into fleshy mutants, while others seemingly grow fantastic mechanical appendages, becoming what are called 'cyborgs.' Some band together into loose gangs that roam the area, preying on whatever...or whomever...they can to survive.

If there is preying to do, that would indicate there are settlements and some kind of trade, and one would be right in this assumption. The settlements here are not large, often dusty and quiet, populated by those that remain unaffected by the unseen T-Energy torrents. Trade comes in the form of the occasional brave caravan entering the Wastelands from the east, searching for rare valuables that are occasionally found, or to seek the craftsmanship of those that live here. The markets in the East, especially in the High Elf lands, are especially interested in the arts and crafts that are created here.

Some settlements, however, are not nearly as lucky. Stories circulate of towns that give up their souls for sustenance, resulting in undead eyes peering from dirty windows in shops that now haven't been frequented in a generation or longer. Their stories remain merely rumors, as tales of those barely able to escape evil clutches spread and change wildly depending on the tellers.

Still other stories revolve around fantastic treasures created by T-Energy concentrations. Those that try to eke a living out of the tired, old soil scoff at such tales, warning newcomers to go back from where they came instead of facing the horrors that exist over the next rise. The truth is, there may indeed be such power and wealth to be found here, for the right kind of adventurer – brave, strong, skilled, and perhaps just a touch foolhardy.
