Evil Genius 2: World Domination Box art Calling ALL Evil Geniuses! H.A.M.M.E.R wants YOU! Do you dream of World Domination? Humanity ceasing to exist? For you to reign supreme? Look no further than what Rebellion has to offer you here. Much like Tropico or Two Point Hospital, Evil Geniuses 2: World Domination covers all the evil bases of your wildest dreams coming true... with a few hiccups here and there, but no dealbreakers. I’ve got to be honest with you, for the first few hours I played Evil Genius 2: World Domination, I was very unsure if World Domination would be my thing and I’d possibly hang up my jacket for good. Having played for a handful of hours now, I feel very differently.

Before we get into the good stuff, I will be upfront. I haven’t played the original Evil Genius that released in 2004, so I walked into this pretty blind. I felt that I may be at a disadvantage not playing the original, but Evil Genius 2: World Domination took me right through the process of how to be as evil as I can be. The tutorial self admittingly is a long process compared to tutorials like in Tropico or Two Point Hospital. Evil Genius 2: World Domination has many things to cover, and it gives a detailed tutorial that I didn’t enjoy from the get-go. It wasn’t until I was left to my own evil planning that I found the tutorial very useful in what it taught me. I won’t spoil the entire tutorial process because how much fun would that be? The basic run down of gameplay generally is to create rooms to house your minions, ensure there is power going to your evil lair, make sure you have somewhere to stash the cash and launch your research and development team. Who doesn’t love a little R & D?

You have the choice of four geniuses, Maximillian Von Klein, Red Ivan, Zalika and Emma. If I had to pick a minion I’d like to play again, I’d play Maximillian, as he was by far my favorite due to having the most power. He makes more gold than any other genius, he can pull in more minions and his overall gameplay is in my opinion more entertaining than the other three. The three lairs you’re given are good looking and any three of the lairs are great choices. One of them isn’t better than the other, so it’s all up to your personal preference. As you go through the playthrough, you can break through harder terrain and build upwards to make a taller building. It can get crazy having several levels going on. Think The Sims, but instead of socializing and controlling if the sims sleep together, you are controlling whether they are building the new technology, defending the lair or cleaning up a mess or two.

The only slight downside of the thorough tutorial and gameplay that was noticeable if you’re really paying attention is that your evil lair will ‘breakdown’ quite frequently during your playthrough. First, your evil lair is very tiny, starting with only one room and your generator room. Everything is great. You make your vault to hide your gold... AND the power goes out. Why? Common sense will tell you that you need more electricity, right? Yes, however the UI doesn’t tell you right off the bat how much electricity a room requires. You’re just told to build a room and get your minions to build it. I feel that it would have been a little better in my opinion to give the player a heads-up on how much electricity you need for each room so they can plan accordingly from the get-go.

Most of your time with Evil Genius 2: World Domination when you’re not building your lair, maintaining it or defending it from being attacked, will be launching ‘Schemes’ worldwide to achieve World Domination. Essentially, ‘Schemes’ are you sending out teams to make lairs in different parts of the map (or the world) to take that area over and dominate it. You take minions from your home lair that you started with and they will come back to you when they succeed at domination per area. Some areas will have science and research schemes that will require certain minions. You can’t have just ANY minion run in and dominate, you need to hire certain minions through the process to beef up your team. There’s no point in sending an unqualified minion to a scheme when it may fail. However, completing schemes is your main source of income, so the more ground you cover successfully, the more money you will make. That’s what we all want right?

As I said briefly above, I saw the length of the tutorial long and too guided for even people like myself who love being hand-held every step of the way, however, it was for the best after all. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of gameplay. Evil Genius 2: World Domination would be a game for you if you are a player that is willing to invest their time and effort in learning how to play efficiently. There’s a way to be an evil genius and if you’re going to do it, so you had better do it right. It’s a bit of a grind at the start, but I guarantee you, your evil dreams will come true and you’ll become the best and richest Evil Genius the world has ever known.
