STAFF REVIEW of Let’s Sing 2023 (Xbox One)

Let’s Sing 2023 Box art I’d like to think that I’m a great singer. I mean, except for singing 'I Want to Break Free' by Queen in this latest edition of the Let’s Sing series. I’m not even kidding, I sounded like a dying whale and it wasn’t nearly as cute as Dory from Finding Nemo speaking “whale”. No whale ever understood me and no one came to find me at the bottom of the ocean, trust me. My sub-par singing abilities aside, I was very excited to review Let’s Sing 2023. I’ve always enjoyed to sing and music is to this day something that I identify with strongly. The first question that came to my mind was “How am I supposed to sing, I don’t have a microphone...?”

Luckily for those of us with iPhones, the latest Android, or an old Guitar Hero microphone collecting dust in a box somewhere in a box in the basement under all that crap you swore you would get rid of three Springs ago, will do just fine. Personally, I used my iPhone. I was highly skeptical of the microphone’s effectiveness and if Let’s Sing 2023 and my iPhone would work in unison. The majority of gameplay has you aiming to get the highest score and to match your voice, melody and pitch of the singer. In terms of my iPhone experience with singing, it was flawless. I was quite happy with the performance. You download the corresponding app on your iPhone from the App Store, pair your phone and you’re on your way to singing until your lungs give up. Surprisingly, I used my AirPods Pro that was bluetoothed to my iPhone and it worked flawlessly as well. I like that I have that flexibility.

The Song List for Let’s Sing 2023 is as follows:

Ed Sheeran - “Bad Habits”
BTS - “Butter”
Billie Eilish - “Happier Than Ever”
Avril Lavigne - “Complicated”
Riton x Nightcrawlers ft. Mufasa & Hyperman - “Friday”
Shouse - “Love Tonight”
Ben E. King - “Stand by Me”
Rita Ora - “Your Song”
Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus - “Old Town Road”
David Guetta ft. Justin Bieber - “2U”
Jason Derulo - “Acapulco”
Glass Animals - “Heat Waves”
The Kid LAROI - “Without You”
Tate McRae - “You Broke Me First”
Queen - “I Want to Break Free”
Charlie Puth - “How Long”
Eiffel 65 - “Blue (Da Ba Dee)
Gotye ft. Kimbra - “Somebody That I Used To Know”
P!NK - “Get the Party Started”
Powfu ft. Beabadoobee - “Death Bed (Coffee For Your Head)”
O-Zone - “Dragostea Din Tei
Carl Douglas - “Kung Fu Fighting”
Meduza ft. Goodboys - “Piece of Your Heart”
Coldplay X BTS - “My Universe”
Ofenbach ft. Lagique - “Wasted Love”
ATB x Topic x A7S - “Your Love (9PM)”
Encanto - “We Don’t Talk about Bruno”
Lady Gage & Bradley Cooper - “Shallow”
Clean Bandit ft. Demi Lovato - “Solo”
Kungs - “Never Going Home”

I have to be honest here, this song list didn’t stand out to me. I only identified with four songs of the thirty which I found it a little disappointing if I’m being honest. Let’s Sing 2023 historically has had song lists that are subject to your music taste. I found myself singing the same songs because I had no clue who most of the artists were, let alone how to sing them. If you don’t sing the songs well, you obviously won’t do very well song wise. Let’s Sing 2023 has several DLC packs for sale in the Microsoft Store though for those who want to expand their song library. Bring a Let’s Sing Disney Edition to the table and I’ll blow anyone out of the water. Lion King, Tangled, High School Musical, Frozen, Frozen 2, Encanto, etc.

Here's a list and a description of each mode within Let's Sing 2023:

Legend Mode - Pick a character. Sing a section of a song and the higher amount of notes you get, the more stars you achieve. You have 12 challenges you have to complete to be eligible to try the boss challenge. The songs are at the choice of the game.

Feat Mode - You pick a song, then you and a partner, or you and the singer of the song, go head to head. The idea of Feat Mode is to get as close as the singer is in notes.

Classic Mode - You sing a song and get a score based on how well you did. The songs you complete become available in Jukebox mode.

Jukebox Mode - You get to listen to all the songs you’ve unlocked from Classic mode.

Mixtape Mode - Different mixtapes, Party On!, Love Songs, Sing the Blues, Millennium Hits, Hottest Tunes, Shuffle, Female Voices and Male Vocalists. The closer you are to the song notes, the more mixtapes you get. If you get 15, you move onto the next mixtape.

Let's Sing World Tour Contest - You choose an opponent and go head to head. The more opponents you defeat, the higher your rank goes.

All right, so you’re highly informed of how you sing the songs, the song list awaiting you and the modes within Let’s Sing 2023. How about how easy it is to start singing? Since I've never played a Let’s Sing title I really wasn't sure what to expect. I have played Guitar Hero and Rockband before, so I got the main idea before even starting. You select the mode you’d like to play, for example in Classic Mode, you pick the song, you pair your device and you follow along with the screen and become the next Celine Dion. The overall gameplay is extremely straight forward. Everyone from a young kid to an older adult can enjoy Let's Sing 2023 without much hassle. Each mode after Classic mode is just as easy to navigate as well.

Let’s talk business. If you’re someone who loves the Let’s Sing series, you will more than likely love Let’s Sing 2023. If you love to sing but don’t care about the song list or adding onto your library by paying for it, then you will probably like it as well. But the biggest obstacle of Let’s Sing 2023 may be the song list, as it's very subjective on your personal musical tastes. There’s only so many times you can sing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” before the song loses its charm and drives you, your parents or spouse literally insane. I can’t see myself picking up my microphone again and playing Let’s Sing 2023 several times in a week, though I may play this with a bunch of friends or family once in a while when we get together. For now, I’m making my final encore.
