Month in Review, December 2007
by Josh Burkhead

December 31, 2007 Happy New Year everyone! 2007 was huge for Xbox 360 gamers. Take a peek at the "Inside Xbox" tab of your dashboard and you'll see a 2007 recap video with Major Nelson. For those who haven't seen the video, he goes on to show the viewer over 150 retail titles that have been released just this year alone. That doesn't even include the Arcade titles.

To say that 2007 was signifigant for Xbox 360 owners would be quite an understatement, as we've seen slew of stellar titles to choose from for our entertainment. Not only have the retail titles been solid this year, for the most part, we also recieved a pretty huge update this last month that added Xvid and Divx video support as well as a nice reorganization of the dashboard. (Bring on the MKV support fellas.)

Bioshock
Definitely one of those titles I need to be finishing...

Now that 2008 is here and the holidays are behind us, like me you probably have quite a few games that are whimpering for some kind of attention. Chances are you'll be catching up with some games of The Orange Box, Bioshock, Mass Effect, as well as others. But don't forget about your demos!!

In October I started to pay close attention to a game that I knew was going to be here sooner or later. It was in December that we finally got the playable demo of Burnout Paradise. This series is near and dear to me as any current series out there. (For future reference it was NBA JAM, T.E., Hangtime, and Showtime (DC) that sold my virtual soul to the game gods.) And in fact, it's the Burnout series that I give credit to in getting me addicted to console racers.

Burnout
One of the best.

When I read the news that the Burnout Paradise demo had been released I finished up my current bout in Assassin's Creed and made my way to the Marketplace. It was a long, drawn out evening already filled with countless soldiers lying in misery and an untrainable horse who obviously wishes to blow my cover. I let the demo download with the full intention of playing it the next day.

After my 9 hour shift of mindless "grown-up time" I came home to find myself surprisingly uninspired to start the demo. I knew what Criterion and EA did to my beloved series and I wasn't too thrilled about it. Burnout Paradise, to me anyways, is like that one crazy Aunt that you know will probably show up to the next family reunion. Every year you've seen her progress from fun and loving to paranoid and psychotic. You liked her when you were a lot younger, but since then she's been through 3 marriages and even more bags of prescription anti-depressants. To my inevitable apprehension, I started the demo. One hour later I turned off my console.

To me, EA and Criterion has taken one of my favorites and slowly taken it down the wrong road. I know they have their own opinion, but for someone like myself who's invested countless hours into the series since the beginning I'm leaving this game feeling betrayed by the one thing that can spoil any good series. Tom Cruise did it better:

Show me the MONAAAAY!
"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!"

Oh, but how can I say such things? Criterion themselves said that Burnout is an ever-changing series, and that change is ineveitable right? Nearly every change they've made past Burnout 2: Point of Impact has taken the series backward.

In my humble opinion there's no better time to be had than a room full of people playing the same game and being able to hand off the controller to anyone in the room, regardless of skill level, and watch them have fun with the current game being played. You could do that in Burnout and Burnout 2. There were enough modes that anyone could pick up and play and feel as if they had a chance to not only compete, but to have a great time while doing it.

At the time, Burnout 3: Takedown was the logical next step for the series. It added a new element to the racing side of the game. But in Burnout 3 they took a simple, yet very deep Crash mode from Burnout 2 and decided to complicate it. Criterion decided to throw in icons that could be picked up while driving towards a crash junction (and oftentimes during the crash as well) as a way to challenge experienced Burnout players. Me being the hardcore Burnout nut that I was, I thought it was the greatest. Adding just another challenge to an already fun and addictive mode! At the time I didn't realize that this simple addition started to take away one of the biggest selling points to the entire Burnout franchise.

Burnout Revenge came along as a near-launch title on the Xbox 360. Of course I had the game preordered, thus the day it was released I had it fired up ready to go. I played through almost the entire game. There was a point in the single player experience where it just got so frustrating it wasn't worth the stress or the broken controllers....or the broken drywall. So I didn't see the entire single player experience through. Oh well. I wanted to go back and experience one of my favorite modes to the Burnout series, and that had to be the Crash mode. Would Criterion change the game again?

Within 30 minutes I realized that this is not the Burnout I fell in love with. They got rid of the icons in the playing field (probably not "cool" anymore I suppose), and substituted a "target car" for a huge add-on to your score if hit. I wasn't amused. The appeal that the series had to me in it's "glory days" was completely gone at this point. No more chase mode (the most missed feature), and no more gameplay that anyone in the house can participate in.

The series changed dramatically in just two releases. We went from a game in which anyone could simply look at and understand, to a game that now requires precision skill, patience, unlimited restarts, and someone to explain to them exactly what's going on on the screen at any time.

Examples in crash mode:

Burnout 2: Point of Impact
-Approach shown intersection. Hit any car you like. Watch the concluding chaos. Score points. Think you can do better? Retry.

Burnout 3: Takedown
-Hold the brake and hit the gas in a "special" pattern during countdown for an added boost. Then steer down the winding road and pick up an icon or two. Hit the ramp and aim for your target. Then during the explosion steer your car with the new feature of "Aftertouch" and pick up more icons that can multiply your score 4 times. If you have enough momentum, steer your car after the initial crash into the group of idle campers in the background for more points. Didn't make it on the top 50,000 scoreboard? Try again.

Burnout 4: Revenge
-Hold the brake and hit the gas in the same manner as you did in the last title. Steer down the winding road and dodge the road hazards as well as any idle cars before you get to the crash junction. HIt the ramp at the beginning of the intersection to skim off the top of the fuel tanker and proceed to bounce down the road into the next intersection. Once you've hit that, start mashing the B button as if it's a money printer and you're hitting the print button. Once you've suceeded in blowing up your car, fly 1000 feet down the road into another intersection. Repeat twice while maintaining full control with Aftertouch. Didn't come in 4th on your Xbox Live ranked match? Try again.

I'm sorry, this is not Burnout. Burnout has always been considered an arcade style racer. While it might feel as an arcade racer might at times, it certainly does not in anyway have that same pick-up-and-play feeling that its predecessor proudly flaunted. I wasn't shocked to see EA and Criterion go the mass-market route to a "fully accessable city", but I was disappointed.
Crazy Taxi
"Ya-Ya-Ya-Ya-Ya!"

If a solid arcade racing title like Burnout 2, Crazy Taxi, or a Daytona USA release (with wheel support, omg pwnage lolz) made it onto the Xbox 360 I'd be the first in line for a preorder. There's something to be said for a fun game that doesn't take itself too seriously. Dare to do something different and away from the mainstream EA and Criterion. We're hungry for a new approach to console racing again. Okay, so what Arcade releases did we see this month?

-Sensible World of Soccer
-Arkadian Warriors
-Tempest
-GripShift
-SpongeBob SquarePants: Underpants Slam

Retail Releases?

-The Golden Compass
-Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom
-MX vs. ATV Untamed
-NCAA March Madness 08

What else happened in December?

-Xbox Live has been experiencing signifigant issues the last two week of December. According to Major, it's like Apollo 13.
-Bizarre confirms "working on a new racing title", possibly a 007 title.
-RockBand guitar issues are sporadic. EA is handling the repairs, with grace it seems.
-Bioshock Update and DLC released
-Dashboard update released, adds Xvid and Divx support, as well as family timer option
-Rockband sees a wide variety of DLC already
-December Car Pack and Road America DLC added to Forza 2. YES!
-Gerstmanngate
-FREE Xbox Originals Gamerpics and Themes now available. ****
-Vivendi and Activision merge
-New GTA 4 trailer released
-Heroic Map Pack for Halo 3 released, 800 MSFT Pts
-Duke Nukem Forever Teaser Trailer released
-Assassin's Creed sells 2.5 Million worldwide and still counting
-Major Nelson announced as "Community Person of the Year". Congrats sir, well deserved!
-Microsoft discounts wireless racing wheel to 99.00 USD. Now there's just no excuse, if you like your racers that is.
-Bomberman Live's "Bomb-up Pack 3" DLC Released

Whew! That's all I have for December 2007. I hope you have a great, safe, New Year's! If you have any comments on this Month in Review please post below or in the Xbox Addict forums!

See you in 2008!

Thankfully, I have all these games to p[$%#@!] the time since I'm all alone now. If I wasn't a complete loser with no future and addict to something as stupid as videogames, then I might go insane sitting by myself! :) Thanks Xbox for giving me something to take the mind of my conscience that reminds me daily that I'm up there with Hitler!"
