If you're looking for a next generation experience, look no further than Gears of War. With over 10-million dollars put into the project, publisher Microsoft and developer Epic Games had a lot to do to justify that kind of payroll. Megaherz *RAGE*
Date reviewed: September 7, 2008.

Overall: Through generation of gaming and people, I have notice that there is only one thing that motivated gamer to keep going on in video game. This reason is because we are always in a quest or in a search for new experience and better innovation to entertainment us. So after I got bored of Call Of Duty 4, like I always do with every game one day or an another, I decide to make a quick survey, with my online buddies, about which game on the xbox 360 should I really get ? Everyone told me that Gears Of War has indeed and by far, the best xbox 360 game to date. So a month ago, I found a brand new copy of Gears Of War at my local Ebgames store for only thirty buck. I didn't miss the chance to finally own a copy of what I believe at this time, to be the best rated game of xbox 360. Big mistake ! Gears Of Wars deliver nothing except deception. The single player is well-done and deliver a thrilling experience, but the multiplayer is a real shame for a game of the year. Overall, the games deserved nothing better than a 7.5 out of ten.

To describre Gears Of War, I could say that it is a third person shooter developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Studios where the gamer embodied the role of Marcus Phoenix. He is first introduced as an inmate, serving a prison sentence for abandoning his military post in order to make a vain attempt to save his father. Through the game, you must fight the locust, an underground race, who invaded earth in a twenty four hours war called emergence day.

Gameplay: In most game, the main problem when it comes to the single player is how repetivie, tedious and boring it can be. Don't worry, it's not really the case in Gears Of War even if at some moment, you feel that the game should have taken an other direction. As an example, in one chapter, you will battle an evil berseker who will crush you with only one rush, the other one, you will fire on propane bottle to light your way into the city and avoid being kill by the krill and finally, you will be able to race in a car throught the highway chased by hordes of krill. Did I mention that you can do the whole campaign with a friends online or split screen ? This feature is so incredible because the game feel like he has been built for co-op. In a couple of chapter, you will need to choose between two different path. In co-op mod, your buddy will never take the same route as you, so you are going to relieve on his skill to survive and sometimes, he will cover you from this second road. There is also, what I called, co-op moment which are absolutly amazing. As an example, in one particular moment, you will need to make sure that your teammate never go in the the dark or the kryll will kill him. So with a spotlight, you will help him cross a street so he can switch the street light for you. There is also one moment where you will have to turn a wheel to cross a river and when your teammate will have to protect you. If you are a single player addict, you can find hidden cog tag to obtain three achievement. They have also have implanted a feature called active reload, where the gamer can reload their gun faster if they reach the grey zone. But they can also reach the white little bar to gain more powerful ammunition. It works really fine in single player mod, but in multiplayer, you will need to use it every times, which is really dumb if you want my advise. Overall, the single player is a fun experience and the possibility to do it in co-op is marvellous. The only flaws is there is barely no story telling at all and the lenght of the campaign is only 6 to 7 hours long. Did I mention that I found most of my information in the game's booklet and internet web site because I played through the whole game without understanding anything else than humain fighting an alien race ?

Otherwise, the multiplayer is a complete let down. How does the hell people can play this horrible version of what the game could have been ? To really describe what you are going to see in the multiplayer, let's see what a typical ranked match can offer you. First, you will see that there is only four mod called : Asasination, Warzone, Execution and Annex. The first three mod play exactly the same, you got two teams (the locust and the CGU) and you must kill the opposite team. Annex is only a pathetic attempt to make a capture the point mod with no success at all. I am sorry for this little turn over but I have to talk to you about the achievement in this game. Except for the one you can do in single player, the online achievement are impossible to do if you have a real life and don't want to spend most of your time online. First of all, I spend hour trying to make achievement in annex, just to find later that this mod never count toward any achievement, which is really stupid because it's a way easier to do kill with a particular weapon in this mod. How does the h*ll can I do 100 kills with a particular weapon when he only appear in a couple of map and it is absolutly impossible to take it without beeing kill ? As an example, the bow in the river map is on the middle, if you rush for it, you will died everytimes because the locust or the cgu will wait for you on the other side. Plus there is no enough ammo in the weapon you find and you lose it every round. Those achievement are a way too difficult for most gamer, and I have not talked about what we call the serious achievement. You must do 10 000 kills. Impossible to do without spending 400 hour in front of your TV. Plus, when a player leave the game, every kill you have done with a particular weapon on him will never count toward the achievement. Really Dumb, end of the turning. Let go back to the typical ranked match description. You first big let down will be that there is no party mod at all. If you want to play with your friends, you will have to find in which server they are. So most of the time you will wait 5-6 min, because a player want to be in his friend team and he don't want to begin the game until they are both in the same team. Is that so tough to make a party mod to avoid thoise kind of unacessary wait ? When the game will start, you will see that you don't have to collect weapon because you got one of the most powerfull weapon in you basic inventory, I mean the ugly shotgun. A typical round is usually described as a shotgun frenzy. Everyone is taking their shotgun and try to kill the other team for the rest of the match. What the point of making a game where everyone rush in the middle just to shotgun each other in the face ? It get repetitive and boring when it always the same type of match. If we have to talk about the weapon, let me say that they are mostly ineffective. The rifle is usuless compare to the shotgun. If you miss your active reload, you can unload a whole clip in the ennemies and it will neither affect his health or his capacity to move. Basicaly, a common strategy used by gamer consist of leaving the firefight and wait five second (yes, only five second) to regain all your health. It's complety unaceptable !You will absolutly need the active reload every time you are going to rush someone or the bullet will have no effect at all. The single player was all about cover and strategy, but the cover in multiplayer is quite usuless when you got the chainsaw. The chainsaw, by the way, is unstoppable and doesn't fit at all in the game who is all about cover. The same thing happen with sticky frag grenade. People rush you like maniac, kill you behind cover because of the chainsaw or a grenade. As a summarize, cover is useless except for wall bouncing which is a cheap trick to kill. In fact, the multiplayer should have been a strategy game, not a total frenzy where sticking grenade and chainsawing people is the way to get free easy kill. The other in-game weapon are the hammer of dawn, who is an unplayable weapon because the control are weak, poor and not responsive at all, the grenade launcher and the bow, who feel exactly the same, and the sniper who is a complet failure. Only one bullet and if you dont do a headshot or have active reload enabled, you will kill nobody. Finally, did I mention that maps are too small. Five second of rushing and you are in the middle shotgunning each other. Did I also mention how many times I played a 4 v.s 3 match ? There is always someone who is leaving because he is losing ? Did I also mention that glitching are omnipresent in this game. Expect to see wall bouncing people, people outside the map and stuff like that. A complet new multiplayer is the way to go for Gears Of War 2.

Graphics: The visual in Gears Of War is the best I seen so far. The texture are perfect, the lighting is so realistic and the level design is impecabble. The visual look like Call Of Duty 4 but with better lighting and shadow execution. The only problem so far is the texture popping. The same thing can be seen in Mas-s Effect, the game forgot to load texture and ten second later it will pop-up on screen. There is also a big heat problem. The game ask for a lot of power from the xbox, expect to see your xbox temperature dractically high and sometimes it will crash. This is why I give a ten out of ten for the visual.

Sound: Most of the dialogue are a bit too cheasy. Some sentence are really funny, other are plain boring and make no sense at all. Maybe they should have explain the story through your teamate instead of talking about trashball and Cole's accomplishment as number 83. Also, the french and english voice of Marcus Phoenix is unbearable. Aside from that, the audio environnement is nearly perfect. Great job !

Suggestions: No more active reload, bigger map, concentrate on strategy not frenzy, less power in the shotgun, easier achievement, no more hammer of dawn in multiplayer, party mode. In fact I want a brand new redone multiplayer because this one is not funny at all and it is so much repetive.

Overall: Most of this game's elements are good. It's quite obvious the team really wanted to make a good cover system and they've achieved that. But what they should have a spent a lot more time on was the AI on your team.

While this game does have a lot of hype, most of which is deserved. That isn't to say it is perfect. In fact, it's far from perfect. But I highly recommend you buy this game or at the very least, rent it.
Gameplay: Gameplay is quite good in this game. The controls feel great. The Active Reload element really makes it much easier to reload your gun when you're surrounded by Locust. But any difficulty past Casual will pretty much need to be played co-op because your team AI is just awful, they pretty much try to get themselves killed.
Graphics: Gears of War redefines what not only the Xbox 360 can do visually but what all video games can do visually. The graphics are absolutely stunning in this game, right down to the very last detail. Especially how real the blood and gore looks! In my opinion the only that has better visuals than Gears of War is real life.
Sound: There isn't really a lot of music in this game, till the end at least. But I do like how real the guns sound. Especially the chainsaw. Not only does it sound like a real chainsaw but it also sounds like you're actually cutting through someone's very flesh! But the best piece of sound in the game is the explosions, so if you like a good exploding sound throw lots of grenades.
Suggestions: Epic, you have created a masterpiece right here. You are clearly very good at what you do and you should probably pay your Foley Artist a bit more. But please, for Gears of War 2 (which I am looking forward to very much) spend more time the ally AI, don't make them suicidal.

Overall: Gears of War is one of the most visceral experiences I have ever had playing a video game. The story while not very good or deep, definitely takes a backseat to some of this generations greatest visuals. Gears of War is a non stop action ride from the minute you press start to the moment the final credits role. Gears of War gains even more momentum the minute you start playing online with friends and foes over Xbox Live. Video Games have never achieved a level of status like this. This is the new benchmark.

Overall: Sadly another game killed by the hype. All these reviews with a 9 or more, I can't understand it, whats so special about this game? The combat is good but the solo isn't anything brilliant & the team ai is in need of a lot of improvement. It is a fantastic game, mind, with mates whether that be online or single player. But apart from that, It's a game thats way too hard on the single player & somewhat boring on your own on the multiplayer.
Gameplay: Single player can be done in two ways, on your own or with someone else. On your own its very challenging, the ai is very good on this game, well the enemys are, but your team are just retarded, they leave you to do all the work & thats why this game becomes ery hard & very frustrating. You often die because your swarmed & theres no help. It's frustrating when you die & It's beyond your power. But then theres the Co-op & actually this is a great improvement on doing it on your own because you actually have some back up. but then this makes the problems for co-op & the problems are simple, A)You wizz through the game like a racoon on crack. B)It's quite annoying if your partner is better as they get all the kills.... But GOW online makes up for the poor campaign, online this game PWNS. 4 on 4, COG V Locust in various forms of death match, which makes up for the poor single player. Including a kill your team leader, killing for points & normal death match.

Graphics: This game is amazing in the visuals department, the graphics are just unreal. But they do show error as you get closer to people & objecys. The actual weapon design is quite good, when there far away. although the guns don't have enough variation. The character design is quite bad mind, Locust & Cog look very similar so your often shooting at your team mates thinking its the enemy.

Overall: An amazing game for all you that love blood and gore. Great controls. Easy online play, that keeps your attention and is always fun. Thousands of people online at your skill and above or even below.
Gameplay: Awesome gameplay that makes it feel like your controlling a war aholic thats out for some blood. Even the online play is awesome! Great same feel, but with some advanced obsessed players that can easily kill you (fags)
Graphics: OUTSTANDING GRAPHICS!!! every inch is filled with pure eye candy. lighting is really good, giving the graphics a shiny cool addicting look.
Sound: commentary from each character yelling out a command or warning adds to the awesome sound effects that make you scared out of your mind! First time you hear the chainsaw get you i bet you'll instantly be addicted!
Suggestions: more levels available to ALL gamers. Some levels aren't available for recent gamers, and some of those levels have achievements for them, pretty necessary that all players have them. Otherwise doing GREAT!! i watched the show of yall creating the game, and now being able to play it makes it even more fun for me!

Overall: Gears Of War is the best third person shooter to date, simple as that.
Gameplay: The fact that you can chainsaw and stick grenades in people puts this game in a class of its own. The controls while different are easy to learn and are easy to remember.
Graphics: One of the best looking next-gen games out so far. The only downside is the graphics load up in parts.
Sound: The sound in this game is amazing, when in gun battles you actually feel in the fight. The voice acting is great although the script could use some work.
Suggestions: Make a better script for Gears Of War 2 and also take out the host advantage and you got yourself the best game EVER.

Gameplay: the gameplay is what makes this game better then anything out there. it just too good to describe.
Graphics: the visuals are what makes this game even better. the graphics are better then anything that garbage of a game console the PS3 can wipe out.
Sound: for the sound it sounds amazing. the voice acting are very good and the sounds of the guns the grunting noise made by the locust are great.

Overall: There are few games that truly reach legendary status. There are even fewer games that transcends even our extremely high expectations. Gears Of War has done both. It is the game of the year, the most fun I've had gaming since Halo 2, and Halo 1put together. It is gaming crack cocaine. I know grown men with families who have taken days off of work to just get one more kill in the multiplayer game. Okay that was me but damnit I got my kill!! Gears of War is gaming bliss, it is well worth the 60 bucks it costs to get one and the 400 bucks it will take to get a 360 if you don't already have one. If you don't have play this game in your lifetime consider yourself cheated.
Gameplay: It is a 3rd person shooter with a twist on some already used gameplay mechanics. It has taken the duck and cover system to astronomically new heights. It adds the brutal in brutality as far as gaming killing goes. And speaking of killing, killing is Marcus Fenix business and business is good. Is there a badder bad !&%$@#* in all of gaming? Marcus will plow you down with his lancer, or curb stomp your head smooth off of your shoulders. He will also, if you allow him to, chainsaw you into puppy chow. Simply put this is the best 3rd person shooter ever. And then there is the multiplayer. It has done what I thought would have been impossible to do until Halo 3 comes out and that's surplant Halo 2 as the best online game ever made for the Xbox. The joy of curb stomping a fool is unmatched by anything in gaming. The unbridled happiness when you torque bow an unfortunate and watch as they run fruitlessly to mincemeatville cannot be thoroughly described. The multiplayer is where it's at but please don't go there if you are faint of heart. I take that back. Please come if you are faint of heart, I remove that heart for ya.
Graphics: There is no need to describe this to you. Just go see it yourself. I don't care where you got to see it just go. And please see it in HD. You will not see a more gorgeous game. It has not been done.
Sound: Some say the games' protagonist sounds a little on the cheesy side. Well the truth is he does. So does everyone else. However, the sounds of the weapons in the game are beautiful. Some sounds are unmistakable like the dreaded sound of a frag being securely planted in your !&%$@#* like an explosive tattoo.
Suggestions: Make the storyline longer and more interesting. The ugly truth: best. game. evuh.

Overall: Gears of War is an extremely fun game with a terrible storyline. Nobody knows the actual story behind Marcus Fenix and his family. Although a good game, definite room for improvement.
Gameplay: Gameplay is very good. Not your typical run and gun shooter, GOW forces you to take cover and use actual tactics to stay alive while killing the crap out of the locusts. Active reload is a genious idea that i think will be used by many game manufacturers in the future. Replay value could be improved by a better storyline and more enemies. Multiplayer is fun but just feels as if it lacks something...
Graphics: The graphics of GOW are jaw dropping. From the chainsaw bayonet splattering grape-jelly blood on the screen to the ever so popular floppy corpses. Visually awesome!
Sound: Sound is one of the biggest faults of the game, along with storyline. Marcus Fenix's voice is just too cheezy. To compliment the cheeziness comes even cheezier comments such as "well we're not here to sell cookies, so they know somethings up." If i were a huge soldier like him, and i said something like that, I would like to be slapped in the face... real hard... by a girl.
Suggestions: GIVE ME A STORYLINE!!! its real fun though

Overall: Its great at Single and co-op campaign. Online portion of the game is really lacking a lot though.
Gameplay: Despite a rather short campaign it has an awesome amount of battles and gameplay. Some or the weapons work better in campaign than in multi.
Graphics: Takes a second or two to load the backdrop graphics but when it does load them they are sharp and clear and dont lagg at all.
Sound: Sound is perfect i havent found any glitches or lagg in the sound so far. You can actually hear and see rain drops that are falling from the sky.

Overall: Gears of war is a third person tactical shooter that puts the gamer in the front seat of a nightmarish war, against a horde of creatures that surfaced from the centre of the planet.
Gameplay: Playing Gears of War is a great experience. The controls are easy to pick up and even easier to master. Whether you are taking cover behind a wall, putting an enemy in the corsshair of your sniper rifle or shredding a locust with your chainsaw you wont be disapointed.
During play you are faced with enemies that act like players; they run to cover at the start of a fight and slowly advance on your position, they move and dive away from grenades and they aren?t afraid to introduce your face to the end of their weapon and that?s just the locusts. Besides the regular locusts, players come across many other enemies such as the locust "boomers": 8ft+ creatures wielding a big rocket launcher called the boomshot, capable of blowing you to bits.
Your arsenal in Gears is great to. From the afore mentioned boomshot rocket launcher, to the longshot sniper rifle, theres something to keep every one happy, and if shooting stuff isnt what gets you going, theres always the lancer, an assault rifle with a rather satisfying mess creating chainsaw attached to the front, ahhh nothing quite like sawing hostile monsters in half while their blood squirts on your screen.

Graphics: The visuals in this game are stunning! Not a single detail that i've seen has been while playing has been overlooked. From the heat waves you see coming from your gun barrel to the blood splatter you get on your screen while letting an enemy become acquainted with your chainsaw, all of it is awesome. The environments differ too, from ruined cities and factories to underground caverns and a speeding train.
The characters themselves are extremely well detailed with excellent skin texture, bulging muscles and the scratches and rips in their armour and clothing. They also respond very well to their environments such as diving, running and backing against a wall for cover, all of which is done with as far as I can see no glitching or clipping at all. The only fault i?ve seen with the visuals in this game are when you chainsaw a wretch, since the wretches are small, pretty much like the grunts in halo1&2, it causes some problems like, if the wretch is on the floor. The chainsaw is used at human height and as a result appears as if you?re sawing open air. But that aside this game really shows what the 360 can do.

Sound: The audio in this game is also excellent. From gunshots, to wretch screams, to your character breathing heavily while sprinting, all of which sounds great.
The game also has a really dramatic soundtrack which helps immerse you into the game much more.
One problem I have noticed with the sound and is the reason I?ve given a 4.5 rather than a 5 is that when using the large mounted machine guns to mow down hordes of enemies I?ve found that the gun often goes almost silent, as if some one were firing it in the distance, when this happens a lot of the other sounds seem to dull down too. Whether this was intended by the creators or not I don?t know, but in my opinion it really detracts from the awesomeness of the game and can spoil a good massacre.

Suggestions: My suggestions would be to simply keep up the outstanding quality and thought that was put into gears of war and I will most definitely continue to buy and recommend the games they develop.

Overall: Gears of War takes place in a war torn city. And your fighting these guys called Locust. Oh and its to short I beat it in two days
Gameplay: The cover system was pretty good but I was expecting more. It is fun to use your chainsaw during close quarters.
Graphics: GOW looks awsome, the enviroments are dark. The baddies look good and scary. I was always on my toes when they got close.
Sound: This game wouldn't be anywhere with out it's sound track

Overall: The online paly alone is worth the purchase price. I love almost everything about it. It is a must have 360 game. If you have not played this game you don't have a clue what you are missing.
Gameplay: The all new game play is going to change the future of gaming. I will expect to see cover in all FPS of the future. And do I even have to say anything about the chainsaw?
Graphics: The Unreal 3 engine is the greatest that I have seen. The blood is great when it splashes onto your screen. It is unbeatable right now.
Sound: Sounds are very realistic. They also are great in 5.1 for locating all the action. If you hear a shot you can really tell where it came from.
Suggestions: Bigger lanuch parties, and promotions would be nice.

Overall: This is the highly anticipated third person shooter from epic games. You play as Marcus Fenix and fight off an alien invasion of your home planet by the Locust.
Gameplay: Gears is a third-person shooter that forces you to use "stop and pop" shooting tactics in order to take out your enemies. Using the environment for cover is of the up most importance in Gears especially in the higher difficulty settings since being out in the open for any length of time will result in quick death.

The AI in Gears is very good, and that goes for both your AI team as well as the Locust enemy. The controls are very easy to learn and work well. In no time you will be running and taking cover as well as rolling from one cover spot to the next in order to evade enemy fire.

The Campaign mode is great. And the storyline is very engaging. Some would say it is very short and I would agree if this was a one player only game. However, I have finished the campaign twice, once on Casual and once on Insane and both times I have done so with a friend on co-op over LIVE. And in this regard I think Gears is just the right length.

Speaking of CO-OP, that is one of the best aspects of Gears. You can play through the entire campagin, not just a dozen or so missions as with other games, with a friend either over LIVE or split screen. And they can jump in at anypoint that you are playing so you don't have to wait for them to start up the game. This is a big plus for replay value and should be an example for other games.

The multiplayer aspect of Gears is very good too. There are three game types. Warzone (team with most victories), Execution (player with most points), and Assassination (one team attempts to protect their leader, while other tries to take the leader out). All games are based on 4 on 4 with Gears vs Locusts.

There are a decent amount of maps and over all the game play is solid. I have noticed that often it is hard to get into a game because you lose connection to the host before you even get into the room. As well, there seems to be a bit of a glitch where your character freezes up and you can't move or shoot. This has happened to me and I have seen it happen to other players as well.
Graphics: Gears is a beautiful game. Set in a backdrop of destruction, the game looks very griity and real. The blood splatter on the screen when you perform a chainsaw kill is awesome. And the explosion of Locust bodies from a frag grenade is really cool. For sure a 17+ title.
Sound: The sound effects and voice-overs are great. The music works very well at setting the dark atmosphere for the game. Sounds great on surround sound turned up loud.
Suggestions: Gears 2 would be my first suggestion. But please fix the glitches on LIVE. Otherwise, Gears is a rock-solid title and Epic accomplished what they set out to do.....make a game that for sure lives up to the hype.

Overall: It is one of the few great games that comes around and is challenging but fun. To me and my friends it is better than halo2, until halo 3 though. Me and my friend did co-op and beat it in 1 sitting, we were so mad that nether one of us has tactics. Which if you dont have any you are screwed.
I really liked how they did it. And how it gives you a taste then falls out in the end. Which what happens in the end made me so mad............
Gameplay: Levels
The levels are fun and challenging. Like having a blind, 8-foot tall locust girl that cann smel and sense your movements busting down a wall right in front of you and freakin u out< and you have to lure it ouside(i hate being bate). They are very intrecit levels with so much detail.

Graphics: Graphics
The x-box 360 really shines with this game. Every thing is so precise and sharp. And the sharacters look real!!!!And how the lighting and shading is superb.

Sound: The sound is that of actually being there. You here shells hitting the ground to a variety of other. Which is super cool.
Suggestions: More guns. You are qiute limited. But all the guns are cool and by noway dissing the chainsaw gun, which will do everything.

Overall: Awesome game. I love it. The only bad thing is that it is extremely short. And I mean really really short.
Gameplay: The gameplay is just incredible. The cover system is great. You have to hide behind objects then lean out to shoot the Locust or otherwise you'll get owned. The characters movements, and jumps from hiding place to hiding place are great. The rodeo run is simply awesome. Sweet co-op. The weapons feel balanced, smart A.I.... Haven't been online yet so can't say anything there
Graphics: GOW, I mean WOW this game has good visuals. Best ever, seriously. Everything looks great, attention to detail is impressive.
Sound: Can't say much here either, sounds are great. Soundtracks are perfect, they outdid themselves here. This is one of those games that the music just inspires you, kinda like Fable.
Suggestions: I bought the game on friday evening, played offline co-op for about 2 hours i guess or less, then today (saturday) i played i'd say 5-6 hours of co-op and i'm allready at act 4 of 5. Online multi is supposed to be one of the best aspects of the game, but remember, not everybody has Live, you can't charge 60 bucks to someone that's only getting 10 hours of gameplay. Live should be just an extra, a good one but focus on the single experience. That's my opinion.
