Sonic Generations Combines Old and New Sonic

As was teased in a recent trailer, Sega is delivering a brand new Sonic game later this year that brings together the two distinct styles of Sonic. The newly-announced Sonic Generations caters to fans of both the classic, side-scrolling action and the more modern-day, 3D adventure games we’ve been mostly seeing since Sonic Adventure landed on Dreamcast.
In Generations you’ll be able to play whichever way you prefer: As a side-scroller or a Sonic Adventure-type game. Levels from previous Sonic games will serve as the inspiration for the stages you’ll play through in Generations. Both styles will have their own unique versions of those environments, as evidenced by the 2D and 3D takes on Green Hill Zone seen in the screenshots above and below.

"Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary," said Sonic’s Global Brand Director, David Corless. "By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way."

There are more than a few people out there who hate the modern style, and while they might be disappointed that the game seems to focus equally on 2D and 3D, they’ll be pleased to hear that you’ll only play as Sonic. (That thankfully means no levels spent hunting down Master Emerald shards.)

Generations, as an HD reinterpretation of Sonic, will only be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Most of Sega’s recent Sonic games have also been available for Wii (with the exception of Kinect launch title Sonic Free Riders), so that comes as a bit of a surprise. Regardless, Generations will be out for Sony and Microsoft’s respective consoles during the 2011 holiday period.
