Gamers are always on the lookout for the best peripherals to enhance their gaming experience. That starts with controllers and headsets and branches out to monitors as well if they aren't playing on a TV of course. ViewSonic is a well-known brand in the monitor field and the ViewSonic XG2736-2K is one of the newest models for gaming. ViewSonic introduced this QHD LCD gaming monitor in July 2024 and we finally got our hands on it to check out for some console and PC gaming. The monitor is listed at $315 USD.
Out of the box, you'll notice that the monitor has adopted a Penguin foot style base. While this creates a lot of stability, I find it does take up a much larger footprint on my small desk compared to some other monitors, so it is a consideration if you have a small space. Because of the wide stand base, I was able to tuck some other items and peripherals within the area, like my controller charging stand, so I didn't lose a lot of overall space, I simply had to redesign some of the area. Also because of this larger base, it sits more forward on my desk than my other monitors, which took some time to get use to as I sit quite close to my monitors and had to adjust my distance when playing on this one.
It has a lot of variation when it comes to height adjustment, and it's easy and smooth to adjust even just using one finger to move it. You can pivot the screen into portrait mode as well for those maybe using it as a secondary monitor. Mounting is supported as well. The ports face downwards and include DC power input via an external ‘power brick', 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, DP 1.4, USB-C (65W PD, DP Alt Mode) and a 3.5mm audio output. 2 x 2W speakers are included for basic sound output.
Dimensions are 614.70mm wide, 570.65mm high and 242.87mm deep. Top and side bezels are dual stage with a raised edge but the slim panel border being flush with the screen. Set up was easy and the on-screen display is controlled by a joystick style button on the back of the screen (right side when looking at it).
The matte anti-glare 27" screen is 2560 x 1440 and boats a 240 Hz refresh rate and response time of 0.5ms, meaning smooth and responsive gameplay alongside Adaptive-Sync. HDMI 2.1 VRR allows VRR technologies such as AMD FreeSync premium to be used. This basically eliminates screen tearing. This new model features a SuperClear IPS panel that supports 10-bit colour and a wide colour gamut. The monitor displays approximately 1.07 billion colours meaning it covers 130% of the sRGB colour gamut and 92% of the NTSC colour gamut. Some other key specifications include a maximum brightness of 300 cd/m², wide 178 degree viewing angles, and a contrast ration of 1000:1. I love the inclusion of eye care technologies built in like anti-flicker and blue light reduction. As someone who spends a lot of time in front of screens this can help reduce eye strain during my extended use.
Playing multiple games I was really pleased with how the colours really popped and how clear the gameplay graphics were. The new Dragon Age game looks absolutely gorgeous on the ViewSonic XG2436-2K. While the audio from the monitor wasn't comparable to higher end speakers or headsets, it was perfectly fine for most of the gameplay I used it for and basic uses.
I loved my time with this monitor, and I think it's an easy recommendation if you are looking to add a new monitor to your current setup if you're on a budget, console and PC gamers alike.
