Taxi Life: A City Driving Simulator - Delivery Driver DLC
by Adam DilevaHaving been a courier for a number of years, I was interested in trying out the latest DLC for Taxi Life: A City Driving Simulator (which you can read our original review HERE), aptly titled Delivery Driver. No longer will you be transporting people, but cargo instead. This requires a slightly different skillset, as you need the packages to arrive promptly and fragile pieces without damages.

Other than the ability to now deliver cargo, another main addition is a new vehicle, titled the Victoris. You’re able to delivery in all of your previously unlocked taxi cars already if you’ve played the base game, but what makes the Victoris special is that you’re able to load a total of eight packages into it, whereas other regular taxi’s can only carry four. And yes, you can still pickup passengers in it as well if you want to change things up now and then. It looks almost like a carbon copy of the Hyundai Santa Cruz, which I actually quite enjoy the appearance of.

Checking your map you’ll see a few new Warehouse icons across the city. This is where you go to pick up delivery packages. Icons will be in one to four boxes, and depending in which car you’re using, that will be how much you can load at one time. If you’re not using the new Victoris, then you’ll only be able to load four packages at once, be it one delivery of four pieces, two deliveries of two boxes, or any combination. The new vehicle allows you to load eight, so you can be much more efficient and load more deliveries at once with it.
Choose your deliveries and your GPS will update to generally be the most efficient route. That is, if you follow the rules of the road of course. You’ll want to check each of the delivery icons, as some pay more than others, and some have better XP rewards, but I can’t seem to figure out the reasoning. You’d assume that further away deliveries would earn you more, but that’s not always the case. Some deliveries are literally a block over, that would have been quicker to walk.
Some packages are labelled as fragile, so if you hit objects during delivery or slam on the brakes, they could become damaged or completely destroyed, so watch your driving when you have this important cargo. Deliver quickly and without damages and you can earn some extra money and XP. A small annoyance, but it’s frustrating that every time I get to the warehouse to load up on packages to deliver, I need to restart my engine once again. I guess I’m not loading into a running car, but it’s a small annoyance that kept irking me.

As a previous courier, the actual delivery of the boxes would get yourself fired real quick if I did it like in this DLC. You arrive to your destination, get out of your call, call the customer, dump the boxes on the sidewalk and leave. You never see the customer come down to get them, so I can only assume they do, but it’s absolutely nothing like delivering for real.
One of the best additions actually came in the latest patch alongside with the DLC and really has nothing to do with the delivering itself. You can finally change a slider in the options for how much pedestrian traffic there is. No more dumb-as-rocks jaywalkers if you want, as I turned them completely off and now have clearer streets to make deliveries quicker.

Oddly enough, I didn’t see a way to convert my staff of extra drivers into delivery drivers instead of passengers. I’m not sure if this was intentional or an oversight, but I would have enjoyed making a delivery company and seeing my vehicles around the city delivering to customers.

At $9.99 USD / $13.49 CAD, there doesn’t really seem to be all that much added. Instead of roaming the city for a passenger, you’re loading up at a warehouse for a few deliveries, then repeat. The animations for delivery aren’t all that impressive, and as an actual courier previously, it makes my blood boil seeing packages just left on the sidewalk. If you’ve been wanting another reason to jump back into Taxi Life, Delivery Driver DLC certainly gives you a reason to, but you might want to wait on a sale, as it feels more like a taxi driver’s side gig rather than a new career.
