STAFF REVIEW of Deceive Inc. (Xbox One)

Deceive Inc. Box art Anyone who has known me long enough will tell you I’m not even remotely good at shooters, and even calling me an average player would be very kind of you. But I do enjoy online multiplayer shooters casually. Get me in a game like Halo or Overwatch, for example, in a multiplayer lobby and I’m happier than a pig in mud. I’m sure the other players in the game would tell you I suck, but that isn’t important. When I saw Deceive Inc, created by Sweet Bandits Studios and Tripwire Interactive, the last thing I thought this title would be is mainly a multiplayer game. Now, as I have experience playing Halo, Overwatch and some Apex Legends, I figured I would like the multiplayer aspect and meld right into the gameplay and start shooting away, right? R-Right?

In the very beginning of gameplay, you are told you must do the tutorial. Now, as a lower than average gamer who is absolute garbage at shooting things unless I have auto-aim, I was ecstatic I’d learn the concepts of Deceive Inc, and maybe - just maybe, I wouldn’t feel like an idiot with a gun laying on the floor dead. I went through the nearly twenty minute tutorial in single player. This whole time, I was under the impression this was a single player experience. Perhaps some missions and a few side quests? You learn how to take cover, why that’s important, the different kinds of cover you can get, and the ins and outs of why it’s important to make sure you’re covered as the right person in the right area. Then the tutorial shows you how to successfully extract the package and make a run for it. The most important piece of Deceive Inc is “Acquire the package and extract with it”. How do you do that might you ask? I’ll tell you. But SHH! It’s top secret!

There are three stages to winning a match of Deceive Inc:

Stage 1: Insertion
-Getting to the Vault Terminal
-Ensure you have the right cover
-Gathering the chips required to get into different doors and upgrades
-Acquiring different key cards that are usually hidden in safe boxes in certain spots.

Stage 2: Hack the Vault Terminal and acquire the package

Stage 3: Extraction
-Getting the hell out of wherever you are to the extraction point

When you are past the tutorial, you can choose Solo or Teams. I felt like where I shined best was in the Teams option and where I spent the vast majority of my time.

I’m not going to pretend I’m an expert in weaponry. Depending on the character you are playing as, you’ll have a weapon assigned to you. You can also unlock characters as you play, but I didn’t get even close to any of them. You have to buy the characters from the shop. I played Ace for most of my playthrough; she had ‘Queen of the Diamond’. To me, it looks like a sniper rifle. For the amount of time I played, Ace’s 'Sniper Rifle' was sufficient.

There are field upgrades called ‘chips’ you can acquire while in matches that can be found in safe boxes which do a range of things. For example, a chip could give you faster hack time, Max HP Up or increased intel capacity. If this all excites you and makes you want to play, they have much more to offer those who are passionate about wanting better stats and make your next match even better than the last. For me, the extremely casual multiplayer gamer, it doesn’t really matter to me. Regardless of my skill set, I wanted to mention this to you because I have friends that are much better at multiplayer shooters like these and the states and upgrades make or break you. Not really sure about the Field Upgrades. There are 4 decks, but while I played, the chips didn’t change. I’m assuming that when you gather more chips you could probably interchange the decks and have different decks. That’s purely speculation. Most of your time playing Deceive Inc will be running around, trying not to blow your cover, shooting at enemies, collecting chips, getting to the vault terminal and then making a mad dash for the exit.

My overall experience was alright. I’m not jumping out of the seat on my couch wanting the action to keep going but I’m not also bored out of my mind that I want to fall asleep. Deceive Inc is colourful, vibrant and the action hits you from the moment you deploy your team. The music and background noise of the entire match makes you want more of the match. Where is the next terminal? Where is the extraction point? Oh! I’m in the wrong room, I need proper cover! Oh no... my cover is blown, shoot, SHOOT! Even casual players can have fun because whether or not you’re good enough, the action is always consistent and that’s important, especially for a multiplayer shooter where you want people coming back all the time to play. For those who like to change up their outfit, you can buy them from the shop and make yourself look nifty as you sneak around and shoot people.

Although my experience wasn’t very broad in terms of my knowledge in multiplayer shooters, I will recommend Deceive Inc based on the fact that any skill level can play. If you enjoy titles like Overwatch and Apex Legends, they will feel at home playing Deceive Inc and still have a great time. Even I could enjoy myself and get in on the action. I had a pleasant time with Deceive Inc and I’m looking forward to the next time I can play. If you’ll excuse me, my cover has now been blown! Gotta go!
