STAFF REVIEW of Fluffy Milo (Xbox One)

Fluffy Milo Box art As much as I adore big story driven games with great characters, there is always a part of me that loves to take breaks between these narrative driven games and just likes to chill with a great puzzle game. It’s an even better experience if that puzzle game happens to be cute, and that’s exactly what I was presented with when the editor of this site reached out and showed me Fluffy Milo from Eastasiasoft. He said it was totally a ‘me’ game, and he was right, I was taken with it immediately.

In Fluffy Milo you play as a cube shaped calico cat, who I assume is named Milo, even though you are not fluffy looking in your cube form. Perhaps you are like one of those fuzzy square footrests you can buy? Your job, over the 60 levels in the game, is to maneuver milk cartons (adorable, right?) to the indicated squares marked with blue paw prints. You are essentially filling Fluffy Milo’s bowls with milk. You start with a few levels that have only one milk carton and eventually move yourself up to levels that are more complicated and have ten milk cartons to move around. One thing I appreciated was that once a carton was placed you could slide it off the spot if you chose to, and you could walk through the paw printed squares as well. They weren’t blocks that you couldn’t move through. Every 15 levels the background changes from lush and tropical though winter, you’ll see all the seasons as you play through.

The gameplay mechanics are simple, use either the D-Pad or the Left Stick to move Milo around the squares. If you make a small error, you can use 'B' to back up to a maximum of 3 moves. If you’ve made a bigger mistake, hit pause and restart the level. There is no penalty for restarting or rewards for completing the puzzles without making mistakes. There is also no timer, or maximum number of moves allowed either, and there are multiple ways to solve each level. This is a very relaxing, no stress game. Even with finding myself blocked at times and restarting levels, I completed the 60 levels in Fluffy Milo in under two hours. This quick completion time makes Fluffy Milo a quick 1000 Gamerscore as well. All for under $5.

The camera angle allows you to see your whole board at a glance, allowing you to plot your movements without anything blocking your sightline. On the perimeter of the puzzle board are your landscaping items, trees, plants, even cute pumpkins in the autumn scene. Although not highly detailed, they had a pleasing look to them, cozy and nostalgic. The colour palette chosen worked very well and I really liked the graphical choices.

The music was very laid back and relaxed, changing throughout the seasons in the game. It has a lo-fi quality to it that I really found relaxing. In fact, I have the game open now, listening to the music as I write this. Again, yay for no timer constraints.

Because of the lack of pressures or complicated movements I think this is a game that opens itself up to be playable by a wide variety of ages and ability levels. While I didn’t see any traditional accessibility options available, it is a very simple game to play and enjoy. I would have enjoyed more levels and a bit more difficulty, but it’s easily one of the cutest games I’ve played recently and an easy recommendation to give. I encourage you to help Fluffy Milo satisfy his milk cravings.
