STAFF REVIEW of I-Ninja (Xbox)

I-Ninja Box art I-Ninja is a game I feel many people will overlook. I've heard people pass it off as a more childish version of Shinobi. I myself think the game is quite entertaining and will make anyone laugh more then once. This little ninja is full of smack talk and his sensi have plenty of little remarks to make you laugh. My favorite remark so far is ?This door is harder to pick then a broken nose!?. The game overall is almost your typical run around while slicing and dicing your way through enemies. There are a few things in the game that make it stand out from others but not enough to make it groundbreaking.

I-Ninja as I stated before is almost your basic run around and beat em up game. There are a few features that make it different from others. One of these features is that after finishing a certain amount of missions to retrieve parts for a giant mech, you will be able to hop in and fight another giant mech. Other missions in the game you will run into will put you in the seat of other machinery such as a gun turret fighting off invading enemies.

You will also be able to achieve higher belt rankings as you move through the game. It seems more and more games in the beat em up style are adding the features of getting new weapons as you make your way through the game and being able to level up. These features make the player feel they aren't going to be the same weak fighter as they were when starting off. All in all I feel these aren't really needed because when you move through the enemies get tougher and your weapon stronger so it still evens out.
However you will have a variety of missions that are quite unique. They will send you through 5 different worlds fighting all the way.

In this game your will have a variety of moves to make your way through the game. These moves I can see being compared to Shinobi but not enough to say it's the same game. The Ninja will be able to hop from wall to wall to climb his way up as well as running along the side of walls. These moves seem to be all mandatory with ninjas these days. You will also be able to do the double jump found in many Xbox titles as well as hovering for a short time in the air by spinning your sword like a helicopter blade. With all these features the gameplay is almost like every other game in the genre.

The visuals in this game aren't anything special. Games with these style of graphics are becoming a bit out dated when compared to other Xbox titles. The game features just your standard character animations when seeing cut scenes which still uses the game engine while the animations during gameplay seems to be better because your not as zoomed in to see the details. The game does seem to be aimed towards a younger crowd if you ignore the smack talking so if this game is aimed towards the younger generation the graphics fit.

The scenery really isn't spectacular either. You won't find yourself stopping to admire it that's for sure but you won't be complaining about it either. It's just as average as the other graphics of games in the same genre. Overall the graphics aren't anything special but they really aren't needed to make this game addictive to play.

The sounds is what made this game fun for me. Not amazing sound effects or music but all the quick comments and smack talk. When a game has several things in it to make you laugh and addictive gameplay it gets a good mark from me. Hearing your character growl the words ?You want some more huh here have some more!? while fighting a swarm of enemies always gets a chuckle from me. With all the smack talk and comments it reminds me of the Evil Dead movies and anything that reminds me of Evil Dead has to be good.

The sound effects for the game are still just as standard as the rest of the game. They aren't horrible in anyway though. There are some games where you hear the sound effects and just want to press the mute button while playing. I-Ninja isn't one of those games, you won't find yourself cranking the volume unless you want to hear more of the smack talking.

Suggestions:
This game even though being pretty standard can easily slash it's way into the classics. I really can't suggest anything to the game developers. I would however suggest people to wait for a price drop on this one because I feel it should have a smaller price tag for what it is.

Overall: 6.0 / 10
Gameplay: 6.0 / 10
Visuals: 5.0 / 10
Sound: 6.4 / 10
